Back to beacon list.

Bremen VOR, 6 May 2009.

The day we went to this beacon it wasn’t transmitting a signal. And when we approached it to make pictures we thought we understood the reason for not transmitting, the beacon was in overhaul (see photos.)
However, when Wim started to make the route directions to this beacon, using Google Earth, he noticed that there was another reason. Google Earth combined with FSXGE placed the beacon at a different spot than where we found it. And on the GE photo at that spot you can see a VOR with a rotating antenna. So obviously they were building a complete new VOR.

Both, our navigation computer and Google Earth sent us to the north of the runway as being the nearest place to the VOR. Possibly because the old beacon was indeed nearer to that spot. Nowadays the beacon is located at the west end of the runway and our route leads you to that spot.

Route from A1 near Dreieck Stuhr to BMN, about 13 km - 13 min.
On the A1 take exit 58a- Dreieck Stuhr and follow signs for A28/E22 Oldenburg/Delmenhorst. After 3.6 km take the exit to the B75 and follow the B75 for 6.7km. Then take the exit towards Grolland/Duckwitzstrasse. At the crossing turn to the right onto Norderländer Strasse and after about 1.2 km you can see the beacon at a distance of about 100 metres. Turn into the small road to the left and park the car. You’ll have to walk on the grass from here because you are not allowed to stop along Norderländer Strasse at this point.

8 July 2010

Wim was visiting Bremen en went to see BMN again. It was in use and the singal was received at his hotel. Then Wim took a good look over the airport and noticed a familiar kind of building. The picture of it isn't very sharp - it was over 30 degrees centigrade - but this is the old VOR BMN.
